If f(x)= -2x+3 , find f(-1)?

Before we solve the equation let's take a look at it.

f(x) = -2x + 3

See how x appears in both f(x) and as the variable in the second half of the equation?

f(x) means "The function of x." You might also see g(x), h(x), and while those are the most common it can really be any letter, and any variable inside the parentheses.

So when we see f(-1), that means "The function of -1" or "The function of x when it is equal to -1."

Catching on? We need to replace x with -1 to solve for f(-1).

So here we go:

f(x) = -2x + 3

f(-1) = -2(-1) + 3

f(-1) = 2 + 3

f(-1) = 5

to plot points   for x just start at the origin (middle) and go to the left however many times it say(if the number is a positive) if the number is a negative then go right however many times it says if it is 0 go nowhere

now keep you pencil there and go up however many times it says on y(if it is positive) if it is negative then go down however many times it says. if it says 0 go nowhere.

you have just plotted a point! now when you finish plotting all of them connect them with a ruler

plot each point as (-3, 7), (0,4), (3,1), (8,-4)   in the parenthesis on the left of the comma is x and the right is y.
