You and a friend decide to race, but don’t set the rules beforehand. You pick a tree on the other side of a field to run towards. You think that you have to follow the fence around the edge of the field, while your friend runs straight for the tree. If you run 2000 feet north and then turn 90° and run 1250 feet east to get to the tree, while your friend runs diagonally across the field to the tree, how far (to the nearest 10th of a mile) does your friend run?
