4.6.1) 4a + 7b =1
-2a + 7b = -5
A. Subtract −+ -2a + 7b = -5 ab from the other equation so the b-terms become opposites. Then, rewrite the system so there are no parentheses.

B. Now, add the equations from Step A vertically.

C. Solve the equation in one variable for that variable.

D. Substitute the result from the previous step into 4a + 7b = 1 and simplify.

E. Write the solution for the system.

F. Check the solution with the original equation not used in Step D.
