Step-by-step explanation:

x^2 + 2x = x^2 + 2x + (2/2)^2 - (2/2)^2 = x^2 + 2x + 1 - 1 = (x + 1)^2 - 1

(there's a tip to completing the square other than applying the basic formula but it's hard to explain it like this)
