Gas Fuel Efficiency (Links to an external site.)

When you buy a car, it will be important to know the gas mileage of the vehicle!
Not all vehicles are the same when it comes the amount of money you will have to pay for gas! Their fuel consumptions are different. For example, bigger vehicles use more gas per mile than smaller vehicles.

Purchasing a vehicle that gets more miles per gallon of gas (mpg) will not only save you money but it is also better for the environment!

For Example:

A Ram 1500 truck gets 23 miles per gallon of gas (23 mpg

If you wanted to travel 46 miles how many gallons of gas will you need to put into this truck?

Set up an equation to solve for g (gallons of gas):

23 β‹… g = 46

Solve:

23 g = 46
23 23

g = 2

It will take you two (2) gallons of gas to travel 46 miles.

Remember gas can be expensive!

What about a fuel efficiency vehicle like a Chevrolet Spark which gets 33 mpg.

How many gallons of gas would it take this vehicle to go the same 46 miles like the truck?

Set up an equation to solve for g (gallons of gas):

33 β‹… g = 46

Solve:

33 g = 46
33 33

g = 1.4

It will only take 1.4 gallons of gas to travel 46 miles. Less than the truck! Which means less money at the gas station!

ASSIGNMENT:

Calculate the gallons of gas to travel 60 miles in a 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman which gets 21 mpg

#1 - Write the equation that you Set up to solve for g (gallons of gas)

#2 - Solve for g. How many gallons of gas needed to travel 60 miles? (Round to the nearest tenth)

Calculate the gallons of gas to travel 60 miles in a 2021 Nissan Versa which gets 35 mpg
#3 - Write the equation that you Set up to solve for g (gallons of gas)

#4 - Solve for g. How many gallons of gas needed to travel 60 miles? (Round to the nearest tenth)

To rent a car, you must pay an Initial fee $ right up front, plus the cost of gas per mile.

For Example:

To rent a 2018 Ford Escort you would pay
$15 plus $0.40 per mile (m)

15 + 0.40 m

Write and solve an equation to find the number of miles (m) you must drive to have the same cost for each of the car rentals below.

#5 - Write the equation that you Set up with variables (m) on both sides

#6 - Solve for m. How many miles would you have to drive for both vehicles to cost the same to rent?

Enter your answers for #1 - 6 in the "Submit Assignment" above in the top right
