A kilometer is a unit of measure that is less than 1 mile. In fact, there are about 1.6 kilometers in a mile. An average speed on the highway would be 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 miles per hour). The International Space Station orbits around the Earth at a constant speed.

You and your partner are given the following number line and table.

A double number line for kilometers of distance traveled and seconds of elapsed time.

distance traveled (km) elapsed time (sec)
0 0
80 10
1

Based on the double number line and table, you decide you can fill in information in the double number line first. You can plot blank kilometers for every 10 seconds from the information given in the table.

From there, you can determine the amount of kilometers traveled in 5 seconds. 5 is blank of 10, therefore you can divide 80 by blank and get blank kilometers.

In the table, you see the relationship of 10 seconds to 1 second. You would divide 10 by blank to get to 1. So that means you divide 80 kilometers by blank to get blank kilometers. You just found the unit rate of blank kilometers for every blank second. Now you can use that unit rate or equivalent fraction to fill in the other missing values in the double number line and table.
