The National Honor Society (NHS) at Landerson High School is selling Valentine's Day candy grams to raise money for their service project. In order to encourage member participation, the
NHS sponsor, Mrs. Sims, decides to have a drawing for a $50 gift card to be awarded to the
member with the winning number.
Each member is given a slip of paper with a number written on it and each time a member sells a
candy gram, Mrs. Sams give the member an additional numbered slip of paper. The more candy
grams a member sells, the more numbers he or she has. At the end of the sales, 50 members sold
a total of 450 candy-grams. Jonah sold the most - a whopping 74! Mrs. Sams generates numbers
from 1 to 500 and Jonah has numbers 4-78.
In the discussion, answer the following questions.
1. What is the probability that any particular number is chosen?
2. What is the probability that one of Jonah's numbers will be chosen?
3. What is the probability that one of Jonah's numbers will not be chosen?
4. Is the process fair? Explain.
5. What way would you propose to choose the winner of the $50 gift card and encourage sales?
