Bush and Al Gore, but a minor candidate, Pat Buchanan, played a significant role. The so-called "butterfly ballot", used only in Palm Beach County, played a major role in the controversy surrounding the election. It has been claimed that the format of this ballot confused voters so that some who intended to vote for the Democrat, Al Gore, punched the wrong hole next to his name and, as a result, voted for Buchanan.
