For example if you start counting at the first marked dash (1) and count to the 10 marked dash and its 10 dashes total then you're counting by 1. If you count and there are only 5 dashes total then it has to be counting by 2. Once you've established what you're counting by you just look at what numbers the number line wants you to find and you can count your way there
