tara has set up a business making soaps. the soaps must fit inside a box which has a
square base, and is 4 cm high. for the purposes of this task you may assume that the inte
and external dimensions are the same. she needs with two issues.
a she would like to tie ribbon around the box. she knows that she needs 20 cm (two
of 10 cm each) in order to tie the bow. ribbon comes in 10 m rolls. suggest at least
method she could use to tie the ribbon. for each method:
• sketch how the ribbon will be tied.
• calculate the length of ribbon needed for each box.
• calculate how many boxes she will be able to tie from one roll of ribbon.
• make a recommendation to tara about which method she should use and justify your
choice.
b her boxes are cut from a1 card, which is 59.4 cm wide and 84.1 cm long. the nets for
her boxes are each cut from a rectangle that is 13 cm wide and 20 cm long. investigate
possible arrangements of the rectangles on a piece of a1 card. within each arrangement,
all nets must be oriented the same way (you cannot have same nets going across and
some along the card). for each arrangement:
• do a sketch to illustrate how the card will be cut.
• calculate how many boxes can be cut from one sheet of card.
• calculate the area of cardboard left over.
make a recommendation to tara about which arrangement she should use and justify
your choice.
