you seem to be comparing fractions.

< , > are to show which ones are bigger or smaller.

to tell which fraction is bigger, you first need to re write them with common denominators.

for example, 2/7 and 1/8. (i think that's what it said). you can't tell which one is bigger when they look like this.

so, you need the lcd of 2/7 and 1/8 which is basically just the smallest common multiple that the denominators have in common.

so, multiply 7 by a few

7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63 70

and now 8 by a few numbers

8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80

lookie there! a common multiple! always use the first common multiple! (the smallest)

so, we need to rewrite them with the common factor.

7 x 8 = 56

so now multiply the denominator by 8 (whatever is done to the denominator is always done to the numerator)

2 x 8 = 16

so 2/7 = 16/56.

now 1/8.

8 x 7 = 56

1 x 7 = 7

7/56

so, now we have 16/56 and 7/56. what to do left? compare the numerators!

clearly 16 is greater than 7, so 2/7 is greater than 1/8!

so you would write 2/7 > 1/8 (the mouth of the > always faces the larger number)

if you are comparing mixed numbers( example: 1 1/2) you need to change the mixed numbers into an improper fraction first.
