To solve this plug 4 in for x and 10 in for y like so...

5(4) - 2(10)

5 × 4 - 2 × 10

We will skip the steps of parentheses and exponents since there are none in this expression

Now we will multiply. The only issue is that there are two sets of numbers to multiply. Which one will we multiply first? You will multiply first the set of numbers that come first when reading from left to right.

In this case you will first multiply 5 with 4

5 × 4 - 2 × 10

20 - 2 × 10

Next we will multiply -2 with 10

20 - 2 × 10

20 - 20

There is no division and addition in this expression so we will go on to subtraction:

20 - 20

= 0
