First: Find the mean.

How to find the mean:  Add the data points.  then divide them by the number of data points, which in this case is (9)  

Second: Fiugre out or calculate how far away each data point is from the mean using positive distances. These are called absolute deviations, or A.D.

Take the data points and subtract them by the mean.

For example,

∣10−16∣=6

∣18−16∣=2

Third: Add the deviations together.  

Example: (6+2)

Last but not least: Divide the sum by the number of data points.  (9)
