Isolate the variables in all cases. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other.

a) 3x = 18

Isolate the variable, x. Divide 3 from both sides:

(3x)/3 = (18)/3

x = 18/3

x = 6

b) 2x = 9

Isolate the variable, x. Divide 2 from both sides:

(2x)/2 = (9)/2

x = 9/2

x = 4.5

c) (x/5) = 7

Isolate the variable, x. Multiply 5 to both sides:

(x/5)(5) = (7)(5)

x = 7 * 5

x = 35

d) x/2 = 6.5

Isolate the variable, x. Multiply 2 to both sides:

(x/2)(2) = (6.5)(2)

x = 6.5 * 2

x = 13
