For x-intercept, put y = 0

x² + 2x - 3=0   ⇒   x² + 3x -x - 3=0     ⇒  x( x + 3 ) -1 ( x + 3 )  ⇒ ( x − 1 )( x + 3 ) = 0

equate each factor to zero and solve for x
