So let's just focus on the 10^-3!



Whenever you see anything with a negative exponent (-3 would be the exponent) you should "bring it down."

What do I mean by that?

10 ^ -3 is basically 10 ^ -3 / 1, right?

Like how 10 is 10/1, your value is also above one.

Whenever you "flip it," the exponent's sign changes! ( My instructor used to call it "bringing it downstairs." ).

So:

10^-3 > 1 / 10^3

The other way works too!

1/ 10 ^ -3 becomes 10^3

It's important that the exponent is positive, especially when you get to higher levels of math like calculus! I haven't encountered any scenarios where a negative exponent is acceptable, so make sure you remember this rule! There are many other ways to make an exponent positive, but this one is the most basic. :)

Take the reciprocal of your value (flip it) and it'll reverse the sign!

Another hint:

And whenever you're multiplying integers, their exponents add.

So:

x^2 • x ^2 = x ^4
