I think the area might be 10 units squared

We could either break this one shape into three separate ones, or we could push the two triangles together to make one, and simply add in the area of the square afterwards. Since the triangles on the left and right have the same height, we can "fuse" them together to make a single triangle with a base of 6 + 2 = 8 and a height of 2. The area of this triangle would then be (1/2)(8)(2) = 4(2) = 8 units². The 2 x 2 square in the middle has an area of (2)(2) = 4 units², so combining the two tells us that the whole figure has an area of 8 + 4 = 12 units²
