assignment: estimating solutions investigation

below is a piece of a local pizza place menu where jacob works.

large cheese pizza$14.85
large supreme pizza$16.90
cheese sticks$5.99
dessert pizza$6.99

use the information above to answer the following questions.

1. a customer has $75 to spend for a pizza party and knows she needs 3 supreme pizzas. jacob tells her she can also afford to buy 4 dessert pizzas. is this reasonable? justify your response using estimation. if the answer is not reasonable, identify the error and then calculate the correct solution.

the answer i put that was wrong:

if the customer only had $75, the customer would not have enough money to cover the pizzas and the dessert pizzas. the customer needs 3 supreme pizzas which already adds up to $50.70. then if the customer were to buy 4 dessert pizzas, the total would come up to $78.66. therefore, the customer wouldn’t have enough money to cover the order.

2. a family comes in with a coupon for $5 off any purchase and wants to know how much it will cost for 1 large supreme pizza and 1 order of cheese sticks if they use their coupon. jacob says it will be $17.89. is this reasonable? justify your response using estimation. if the answer is not reasonable, identify the error and then calculate the correct solution.

the answer i put that was wrong:

i would say yes the price is reasonable because 1 supreme pizza costs $16.90, and 1 order of cheeses ticks costs $5.99, so without the coupon the total would be $22.89. with the coupon the total would come to $17.89, this is reasonable.

3. a customer calls in a delivery order for 3 large cheese pizzas and 2 dessert pizzas. the customer wants to give a 20% tip to the delivery driver. jacob says that $5 would be about 20%. is this reasonable? justify your response using estimation. if the answer is not reasonable, identify the error and then calculate the correct solution.

the answer i put that was wrong:

this isn’t reasonable at all. with everything that the customer orders the total would come to $58.83. 20% of $58.53 is $11.71. so, if the customer wants to tip 20%, then he should tip the driver $11.71.

4. the largest order last saturday was from a basketball team that ordered 5 large supreme pizzas, 5 large cheese pizzas, 5 orders of cheese sticks and 5 dessert pizzas. jacob said the total was about $225. is this reasonable? justify your response using estimation. if the answer is not reasonable, identify the error and then calculate the correct solution.

the answer i put that was wrong:

this is reasonable because the original total would be $223.65, but if you round it up, it comes to $225.00.

5. adding additional toppings to a large cheese pizza cost $1.39 per topping. the equation 14.85 + 1.39x=20 can be used to determine the number of toppings that can be added to a large cheese pizza for a total of $20. jacob solves the equation and says you can get 4 toppings added if you have $20. is this reasonable? justify your response. if the answer is not reasonable, identify the error and then calculate the correct solution.

the answer i put that was wrong:

14.85 + 1.39x =201.39x = 20 –14.851.39x = 5.151.39 / 1.39 = 5.15 / 1.39x = 3.70
