2. Steve, a drunk driver on his way home from the office Christmas party, passes out behind the wheel and goes through a red light, smashing into a taxicab driven by Terry. Both Steve and Terry are unhurt but their respective cars are badly damaged. Melissa, Steve's secretary, who had accepted a lift home with him, even though she was aware of his inebriated condition, is seriously injured. So too is Beatrice, the passenger in the taxicab. She was wearing a seatbelt but it failed to work. Beatrice is rushed to hospital, where she is operated on by Mr. Hope, a surgeon. He manages to save her life, but cannot repair an injury to her spinal cord and she is paralysed from the waist down. Mr. Hope had negligently cut into Beatrice's spinal cord but, given the nature of her injuries, she would have been paralysed anyway. Hope's error deprived her, however, of a 10% chance of full recovery.

Beatrice misses her flight but, as fate would have it, the plane crashes into the ocean just after take-off and all on board are killed.

Advise the parties.
