Read the scenarios below and write about how each law enforcement professional should handle the situation in a legally and ethically sound way.
Scenario 1: A police officer notices a man running out of a jewelry store with a bag on his shoulder. The officer looks through the store window to find the staff as well as the storeowner in a state of panic.
Scenario 2: The court appoints a defense attorney to represent a woman (the defendant) charged with second-degree murder in a criminal trial. During the discussion between the defendant and his attorney, the defendant confesses to committing the murder.
Scenario 3: A judge receives a high-profile murder bench trial on her docket. The judge recently had a personal tragedy, wherein a person of a specific ethnic background broke into her home and assaulted her daughter, who was home alone at the time. The perpetrator remains at large. The defendant in the murder trial is of the same ethnic background as the person who broke into the judge’s home. The judge is not sure if she can remain impartial given her recent personal experience.
