Over the course of its history, the Spanish have attempted forced conversions of Moorish muslims, as well as Jews that lived in Iberia. Eventually during the later stages of the reconquista they eventually issued between 1492-1501, orders that meant all muslims or jews had to convert or leave Spanish lands. The idea was to create a universal catholic orthodoxy and formed part of the Spanish Inquisition. This was not the case for the entire history of the reconquest of Iberia, where often both the islamic and the jewish population was tolerated and it was not until the later stages when christian control and population was such that the non-christians could be forced out of their land.
