Andrew Johnson was a self-made, which made him a very strong character. Johnson was a man of parts; he was intelligent, able, forceful, and gifted with honesty. He was also steadfastly devoted to duty and to the people; he was a dogmatic champion of states’ rights and the Constitution. Though these strengths did serve him well, he did have many weaknesses. He was a misfit; a Southerner who did not understand the North, a Tennessean who had earned the distrust of the South, a Democrat who had never been accepted by the Republicans, a president who had never been elected to the office, he was not at home. Hotheaded, contentious, and stubborn, he was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time; a reconstruction policy devised by angels may have failed in his hands.

Johnson was loyal to the united states and believed in the constitution above all.

They were constantly being overlooked as a people and were being controlled by people who weren't really native to their homeland.
