The political context surrounding slavery in the years leading up to the Dred Scott decision was one of compromise and sectional tensions. With the opening of Western territories, there was heightened debate between the North and South over the issue of slavery. 

It illustrated differences because it showed how the two areas, north and south, had differences in belief. it also helped to show that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because all slave owners had the right to take there property wherever they pleased.
