During the years of 1848–1855, many people packed up and moved to California in the hopes of striking gold–literally. This led to a massive boom in San Fransisco, since ships brought in almost half of the settlers searching for gold. While most of the settlers failed in their attempt to find gold, or simply didn't find enough, the boom had a lasting impact for California.
