The primary goal of the Gulf War in 1991 was the liberate Kuwait from Iraqi forces.  Saddam Husein refused to withdraw from Kuwait after invading the country in 1990.  Operation Desert Storm was the US led air attack that lasted for 42 days.  President Bush declared a cease fire.  The majority of the Iraqi forces fled before the cease fire.
