Compared to World War I, the literary outpouring from World War II can be best described as less realistic than many of the literary works that that appeared after World War I.  In the wake of World War II, many novelists, playwrights, short story writers, and poets delved in the Postmodern style of literary writing, which focused on magic-realism, fantasy, irony, and dark humor, as compared to the brutally realistic literary works that appeared in the wake of World War I.  In the post-World War II era, many American and European poets ended their lives through suicide, including John Berryman, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and several others.
