What made silk road hard to travel?

Mountains, rivers, valleys, deserts and plains all lined the silk road. To trade, they would have to cross these and ensure their products didn't get damaged or lost along the way. If someone fell off of the mountain, their products would go too. If they cross a river, their supplies could get washed away. If they crossed the desert and there was a sandstorm, their supplies were buried.
