The Grange, which was formally known as The Patrons of Husbandry, was an organization created to advance methods of agriculture as well as assisting farmers with any difficulties that arose.

Between 1860 and 1870 farmers faced many problems such as high railroad fares to ship cross, high interests and mortgage rates, expensive farming machinery and swarms of grasshoppers among others.

This led to the foundation of The Grange by Oliver H. Kelley in 1867.
