How did the miners and prospectors change the maxwell land grant?

They petitioned the Vice President of the United States, Schuyler Colfax, to create a new county, called Colfax County. When the county was created, control of the Maxwell Land Grant was turned over to the county. Since Maxwell did not have control, he sold the land grant.
