The Empire of Ghana (750-1068) was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and the western part of Mali, south of the Sahara, in the middle valley of the Senegal River. It was known by the name of Wagadu by its own Soninké citizens, but the Europeans and Arabs called it the Ghanaian Empire for the title of its king, Ghana, meaning warrior king. The kingdom of Ghana emerged from the relatively small agro-pastoral settlements of the fourth century in the region known as Awkar. Its apogee came in the ninth and tenth centuries.

The capital was built in Kumbi Saleh on the edge of the Sahara. Most of the houses were made of wood and clay, but the upper class lived in stone and wooden houses. In practice there were two cities separated by about 10 kilometers densely populated by merchants. The larger section was called El-Ghaba and was protected by a stone wall inside which was the political and religious center. There they were the imperial palace and the forests of sacred trees used in the religious rituals of the soninke. A mosque was then built for Muslim officials. The other section of the city was the commercial one, populated by numerous Arab and Berber merchants who built a dozen mosques. The Ghanas tolerated the spread of Islam but never converted, as it did with the Takrur rulers in what is now Senegal.
