The Battle of Antietam was considered a turning point in the Civil War because this was the first major Union victory in the East.

Until Antietam, the Confederates led by Robert E. Lee had won most early battles in Virgina, such as First Bull Run, the Seven Days Battle for Richmond, and Second Bull Run.

It is true that Antietam was the bloodiest one day battle in American history, but that is not why it is a turning point. President Abraham Lincoln needed a Union victory to maintain public support and ultimately issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

Although it was the bloodiest battle, casualties on both sides were similar in number and nature. And even though it ended in a draw with no clear winner, it stopped the Confederates from advancing on Washington DC. Therefore, it is usually considered a Union victory.

The Battle of Antietam is considered a stalemate and though no military victory can be claimed there were social changes that occurred because of the battle. The battle was photographed with the photos being shown to the people of the North. These photographs showed the Northern citizens the intensity of the war and the lives at stake. Lincoln also made the Emancipation Proclamation following the Battle of Antietam. This proclamation gave the war purpose and a moral mission to justify the lives lost.
