In the 1800s, violent, anti-Chinese riots took place in different cities all over the West Coast.

During the California Gold Rush and the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad, a large number of Chinese emigrated to the United States, stimulating the animosity of American citizens. After being forcibly removed from the mines, most of the Chinese settled in what is now known as Chinatown in cities such as San Francisco (California), assuming low-wage jobs such as restaurant cleaning and laundry. With the economy of the post-civil war period in decline during the 1870s, animosity against the Chinese minority was politicized by union leader Denis Kearney and his labor party, as well as by the governor of California, John Bigler.  

This political influence led to numerous protests against the Chinese, among which the Los Angeles Massacre in 1871, with 20 people killed, and the San Francisco Riots of 1877, which ended with 4 Chinese killed, had great relevance. Other protests occurred in Seattle, Tacoma and Rock Springs.
