John Ross wrote the letter to President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to state his support for the Confederate cause.

As per Ross, the Cherokee Nation and United States had been tied by treaties which enacted the protection and support of the greater and powerful nation, United States, for the weaker nation, the Cherokee one.

As stated in the previousanswer, he said that the Cherokee nation was smaller and less powerful than United States.

According to Ross, the Cherokee had been surrounded by pressure of the Confederation which forced them to negotiate a treaty.

Ross wanted military protection by the Federal Government and the ratification of the existing treaties.
