The British government tried to stop smuggling with the Sugar Act (c). The Sugar Act is also known as the American Revenues Act. The Sugar Act follows the Molasses Act. The purpose of the Molasses act was to increase the price of Molasses in the British Colonies. Sugar was expensive but Molasses was much cheaper. As a result, people did not buy sugar. By adding a tax to molasses, the price of molasses was more on a par with the price of sugar. 
The enforcement of the sugar act made it more difficult for molasses smugglers to smuggle Molasses into the various colonial ports.
