in "the nun's priest's tale" by geoffrey chaucer, the fox captures the rooster named chanticleer by the neck. as a result, pertelote, the hen that chanticleer loved, burns herself in the fire. furthermore, the other hens cry for chanticleer as well as the women on the farm. the women, besides expressing their grief, start running after the fox together with men from neighbouring farms. also, all the animals on the farm, including the dogs and the cow, start to make noise when they find out what happened to chanticleer. all in all, the attack of the fox triggers a chain reaction of grief on the farm.
