How did religion respond to the consumer culture of the 1920s

The 20s in the United States is an incredibly interesting period of time due to the various clashes or battles that took place between religious conservatives and more progressive liberal ideologies at the time.

The first World War had ended in 1918. The horrors of death and destruction of the Great War, had inspired people to really question the fundamental meaning of life in a new and great way. The year 1920 brought in women's right to vote and prohibited alcohol. Such an odd combination of ideas, to help make women freer and yet at the same time restrict other freedoms for all people. This was the set up for the 1920s.

Groups of conservative people pushed their agenda as hard as they could in order to enforce their perception of an orderly society. This is what is really asked in the question. Groups like the KKK, a notorious hate group and associated with regilious conservatives at the time, along with other groups pushed for immigration reform to stem the influx of people of other races and religions. 

Even within religious groups themselves, they fought over traditionally held beliefs and newer more modern interpretations of what the religion actually meant and how religious ceremony and customs should be maintained.

Also a great disparity grew between urban centers and agricultural areas. Urban populations gained in salary thus representing the consumer culture the religious tried to undermine. And in the rural populations, the traditional religious ideas were reinforced and flourished as a result of the stagnation or lack of improvement of wages. The rural people held to their traditional beliefs because that is always what had allowed them to survive. The urban populations could be more flexible in their beliefs as their wages allowed them to be more comfortable.
