The freedoms that African American patrons were granted through the Civil Rights Act of 1875 were equal treatment in public transportation, in public accomodations and service on juries.

This Civil Rights Act forbade racial discrimination in public places and facilities and made it illegal to deny such rights to any person on the grounds of his or her colour or race. However, in 1883, the Supreme Court declared some sections of this Act as inconstitutional, which caused its voidance.
