The Union also offered emancipation to slaves who fought for the North. The Confiscation Act also allowed Union soldiers to confiscate slaves and bring them into the Union army. Slaves taken by Union soldiers were allowed to aid in the war effort through not armed to fight. The first regiment of blacks soldiers was the 54th regiment formed in Massachusetts.
