Why were sherman's troops so gung-ho about entering south carolina during the civil war?

By crossing Georgia virtually unopposed , they had demonstrated that the confederacy was dying on its feet . So South Carolina was the state that had started the whole war , and Sherman was keen to start punitive raids on South Carolina .
