Due to the fall of mercantilist economic theory at the end of the 18th century and the rise of classical liberalism, the economic theory of laissez-faire - due to a revolution in the economy led by Adam Smith and other economists - corporations changed from being entities governmental entities, to be public and private economic entities free of government direction.
