Alexis de Tocqueville is a French diplomat, political scientist, and historian. He is well known through his work entitled De La Démocratie en Amérique (Democracy in America). A book about the social and political conditions of America. This book was written in 1831. At that time he and his partner Gustave de Beaumont were assigned by France to study the prison system in America. Then he used the opportunity to travel around America for studying social, political and economic conditions. Through that traveling, he observed the condition of America and took extensive note.

During this trip, Beaumont made a side trip to Lower Canada to Montreal and Quebec City from mid-August to early September 1831. He wrote Jacksonian America: Marie or Slavery in the United States, a novel and a social critique defining the split-up of races in a moral society and the conditions of slaves in the United State. Nine months later, on February 1832 Tocqueville submitted a report entitled De La Démocratie en Amérique. This work starts with social changing conditions.  

He wrote that over the previous seven hundred years the social and economic conditions of men had become more equal. Tocqueville believed that in the modern world experienced beneficial effects is equality. Tocqueville emphasized equality to a number of factors, such as give everyone the opportunity to have equal opportunities in politics, economic openness, and the other equality of rights.
