President Andrew Johnson took office after the assassination of President Lincoln and was the first president in the history of American History to have impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Congress. He was elected as the Vice President when Abraham Lincoln was elected as President and was the Governor of Tennessee.  

Being a democrat, he was an avid supporter of the rights of states and introduced many populist measures during his term in office. He was the only Governor among the Southern States who supported in favour of the Union. On becoming the President, he took a moderate approach to restoring the South to the Union, which went against the policies of the hard-line conservative Republicans, who believed that as President, he should have taken a stronger approach in restoring the Southern states to the Union, thus preserving the unity and integrity of the United States.  

The President wanted to gain support for his policies, but the Republicans who won a majority in both houses of the Congress voted to impeach President Johnson in February 1868. He survived the impeachment charges but did not run for a second term. President Johnson had a challenging Presidency, where he attempted to restore the Southern states to the Union, but also tried to preserve their autonomy and granted amnesty to Confederate generals. However, the Southern States refused to co-operate, and opposed him at every turn, oppressing the newly freed slaves. He was also against the 14th Amendment Act, asking the Southern states against its ratification, which was again unsuccessful.
