The Tang Dynasty, in the Wade-Giles romanization, was written the T‘ang Dynasty was one of the Chinese dynasties that succeeded the Sui Dynasty and preceded the period of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms. This dynasty was founded by the Li (李) family, who took power during the decline and collapse of the Sui dynasty. The continuation of this dynasty was interrupted when Maharani Wu Zetian took over the throne and declared the establishment of the Second Zhou dynasty (690-705), and became the only female emperor in Chinese history. This dynasty ruled for a period of 289 years with 21 emperors.

The Tang period was generally a period of progress and stability, except during the An Lushan Rebellion and the decline of central authority in the latter part of this dynasty.
