Which primary source document could a historian understand why the civil war started?

Assuming that this is referring to the same list of options that was posted before with this question, the best response would be the "correspondence of Abraham Lincoln," since in this correspondence Lincoln speaks at length and openly about the dire conditions in the US during this time.
