Two technologies that humans have used to overcome environmental challenges in Dubai are, 1) Ocean water desalination and 2) air conditioning.

As rich as Dubai is, it is located in the desert. The climate conditions are so extreme. The dust storm is dangerous. People need air conditioning in order to survive comfortably in those extreme conditions. In the desert, it is too hot during the day but too cold during the night. The heat for the cold nights and the air conditioning for the day, are important technologies to live well in Dubai.

The other environmental challenge is fresh water. Although Dubai has the sea next to the city, the water is salty and humans cannot drink that water. There has to be a special industry to desalinate the water and convert it into fresh water. The process is too expensive and much salty water is returned to the sea. So, only wealthy countries can have this process and not poor ones.
