How did france and england attempt to strengthen their grip on the ohio territory? they encouraged the building of settlements?

In order to strengthen their presence in Ohio, they first built as many forts there as possible and drove out the Indians. Once conquering the area, they encouraged the Indians to built settlements in which the French and British would have influence over. They also used missionaries to ensure that the Indians were at ease with them.
