Why was the conflict between the united states and the soviet union referred to as a "cold" war?

Because the Cold War never actually included any armed conflict. It wasn't a war really, not in the sense that we often think of war. It was an ideological struggle between the US and the USSR, a war of philosophies, a war that never actually included any warfare.
