John Proctor, described as a man of great size and good character, opposed the accusations but he was one of the few who dared to say so openly.

The Proctors were tried on August 5, 1692 and found guilty. While they were in prison, the sheriff confiscated his property. Their cattle was sold at a low price, slaughtered or sent to the West Indies and the beer barrels of the tavern emptied, leaving their children without livelihoods.

Proctor was hanged on August 19 and Elizabeth's execution postponed because she was pregnant. In January 1693 she gave birth in prison to her son John but was not released until May.
