The Chang Jiang, also known as the Yangtze, is the longest river in Asia and
the third longest river in the world. How does the environment vary along the
river's 3,900-mile course? Read the descriptions of life at different parts of the
river (marked as a, b, and c on the map at right), Then answer the questions
about how physical geography can shape cultures and economies.
a. Origins of the Chang Jiang The river's source is high in the Tanggula Mountains
in the region of Tibet. From there, the river flows east across the Tibetan
Plateau. It then turns south and enters a series of deep gorges and mountain
valleys. The few villages in this remote area are found high above the river's
violent rapids and icy waterfalls.
