I think that the United States should keep from interfering with European affairs unless specifically asked to do so by a certain European country. For starters, Europe is full of developed and stable countries that should have no problem handling their issues themselves. Therefore, leaving the United States more resources to improve their citizen’s well-being as well as eliminating that risk that a certain country would react negatively to the interference. For example, the United States is now pUnited Stateshing for more troops in NATO in case of a United States attack. In response, the United States has stated that all this will accomplish is increased tensions in one of the most peaceful areas in Europe.
I believe that it is possible for the United States to not only stay out of European affairs but to stay out of all foreign affairs. However, I think sometimes the United States needs to intervene in certain foreign affairs, and by this, I mean situations that can or will affect the United States or innocent people if left alone. In most if not all of these cases it would not be European affairs but probably the Middle East, Korean, Japanese, or Philippine affairs. I think the United States needs to step in sometimes because if the wrong people get in charge of a country they can wreak havoc on their citizens as well as neighboring countries. I feel this way because the United States is a world superpower so when it comes to people’s lives being at stake I feel we should step in. However, it is possible to turn a blind eye to these things until it can directly affect our people but that would not be right.
As I stated in the previous paragraph, I believe the United States only has a moral obligation to get involved with other countries affairs when human lives are or will be at stake.“Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” This quote is from Psalm 82:4 and shows that based on the bible people should help others when they are in need. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.” This quote is from John 15:13 which really shows that if you are able you should help others.
Another strong nation that is somewhat involved with foreign affairs is Canada. Canada generally takes the same approach as the United States and European powers, such as in World War 1, World War 2, and the Cold War, However, sometimes Canada likes to stay out of certain situations to keep their friendly reputation as well as make sure their people do not suffer any negative effects. For example, Canada chose to remain neutral when Britain, France, and Israel invaded Egypt. Another instance was during the Cuban Revolution Canada continued to have economic and diplomatic ties to Cuba and Canada did not want to hurt its economy (Foreign Policy). I think that Canada has a better approach to foreign affairs because they tend to take their people’s well-being into consideration before acting.
